Famous Cambridge People
Cambridge is best known for its top class University, its architecture and its punt boats. In addition it is home to the Fitzwilliam museum, the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens and the American Cemetery, which holds the remains of 3812 American men and women who lost their lives in World War II and the Tablet of the Missing, which memorialises the 5127 missing servicemen. But as well as being the home to Cambridge Van Man there are also a number of famous and accomplished people who have originated from the town, especially in the fields of entertainment and literature. Here is a sampling of some of them.
Richard Attenborough
A famous actor known for roles such as John Hammond in Jurassic Park and Kris Kringle in the Christmas classic, Miracle on 34th Street. He was born in Cambridge on August 29th 1923. Attenborough studied at school in nearby Leicester before going on to complete a degree at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Following on from his studies he landed some top roles in a range of highly rated movies and went on to become a producer and director. His most recent work was as director and producer of the movie Closing the Ring in 2007, prior to health issues which have prompted retirement.
Olivia Newton-John
Olivia Newton-John is a singer and actress born in Cambridge on 26th September 1948. Having only spent six years in the city before her parents moved her to Melbourne. She rose to fame as a singer in 1971 with her first solo album, If Not For You, the title track of which was written by Bob Dylan. However following a mildly successful start as a singer Newton-John landed the Role as Sandy in Grease, which made her career soar. She currently lives in America and still tours as a singer, she is also involved in a number of charities, including one breast cancer charity which saw her visit Cambridge as a fundraising campaign in 2009.
Douglas Adams
Author Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge in 1952 on 11th March. Famous for his series The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams was born in the city but moved to London with his parents just a few months after his birth. Adams returned to Cambridge to study English at St John’s College before his writing career took off. Douglas Adams relocated to America in 1999 and died in 2001 following a heart attack. His body has been laid to rest in Highgate cemetery in London.
Other famous residents of Cambridge have included Syd Barrett and other members of the band Pink Floyd, Jeffery Archer and Clive James.
